The Crystal Tour: Fire Falling Review

Fire-Falling-DarkIn case you haven’t heard, there is an awesome fantasy series called Air Awakens, written by Elise Kova, an inspiring indie author who I semi-stalk on Twitter and Instagram. She is a writing machine, getting down thousands of words a day, churning out a book every three months. I’m the ultimate lurker, keeping quiet and peeking around corners. But then I jumped on the chance to join her Crystal Tour celebrating the upcoming release of the final book in the five-book series, Crystal Crowned. At the time, I had only read Air Awakens, the first book in the series, so I volunteered to read and post a review for Fire Falling, the second book. I’m excited to share my thoughts on Fire Falling. There’s also a link down below to a huge raffle and other events in the Crystal Tour.

F-Cover-Social-11Soldier… Sorcerer… Savior… Who is Vhalla Yarl?

Vhalla Yarl marches to war as property of the Solaris Empire. The Emperor counts on her to bring victory, the Senate counts on her death, and the only thing Vhalla can count on is the fight of her life. As she grapples with the ghosts of her past, new challenges in the present threaten to shatter the remnants of her fragile sanity. Will she maintain her humanity? Or will she truly become the Empire’s monster?

A Mini-Review

Fire Falling starts where Air Awakens left off, with a broken Vhalla, learning to live with the consequences of what occurred on the Night of Wind and Fire and the resulting trial. In Fire Falling, we leave the palace and march north with the army. Vhalla makes new friends to replace the ones she left behind in the library, and of course, new enemies.

I love how this book and the series in general really focuses not just on Vhalla’s developing romantic relationship with Aldrik, the crown prince, but also on her friendships, and on Aldrik and Baldair’s relationship as brothers. The friendships really pull Vhalla through, and she begins to truly grow in Fire Falling. I’m glad she’s not passing out as much as she was in Air Awakens! Then there’s her relationship with Aldrik, which is never rushed. The anticipation is killing me, TBH. Also, Aldrik is officially on my list of book-crushes.

This book is a great sequel, and ends on a nail-biting cliffhanger. I immediately bought Earth’s End, the third book in the series, to continue reading the same night.

Another neat thing is the Fire Falling playlist. I can’t write to music, but Elise Kova does, and she gives you the full breakdown for the music that inspired this book here.

Somehow, she managed to focus on the real world long enough to graduate with a Master’s in Business Administration before crawling back under her favorite writing blanket to conceptualize her next magic system. She currently lives in St. Petersburg, Florida, and when she s not writing can be found playing video games, watching anime, or talking with readers on social media. She is the author of the Air Awakens Series as well as the upcoming Loom Saga (Keymaster, 2017).
